In terms of each classification, my predictions for GTA teams are:
AAAA-Pope will medal.Notre Dame (Ajax) and Thomson(If they qualify) will be the other GTA teams with the best chance.
AAA- Nobody will medal from the GTA in this classification.
AA- Downsview will contend for a medal as they are our best chance in this classification. TDSB only get's one representative in AA and Richview nor Oakwood will knock off Downsview.
A- Nobody will medal from the GTA

AAAA is in Hamilton. St. Mary's and the second GHAC team, which could be St. Thomas More, Burlington Notre Dame or Oakville Holy Trinity, will be serious contenders, plus Waterloo and the SWOSSA winner, either Lakeshore St. Anne's or Sarnia Northern. But the prohibitive favourite is Brantford St. John's.

AAA is in London. General Amherst and Louis Riel are the favourites. The WOSSA winner, either East Elgin or Ingersoll, will be a contender.

AA is in Belleville. Guelph Bishop Macdonell is the favourite. Host and probable COSSA champion Belleville Nicholson will be a contender.

In AAAA from the GTA, Notre Dame, John Paul II and D'Youville are the top teams. A lot depends upon where they are seeded. Last year D'Youville beat John Paul II in the consolation final in Sarnia. Notre Dame was 5th, but lost their big post to graduation. One or more of them may step up to be a medal contender, but it will be a very crowded field amongst the top 6 seeds.

Brantford St. John's is undefeated this season (something like 35-0) and has beaten most (if not all) of the top teams. The road to the Quad A gold likely goes through them.

Brantford St John's is a terrific team and the clear favorite to win the gold in AAAA.

Two more additions to my thoughts for AA. Sault Ste. Marie St. Basil have been strong for three years and finally won the consolation game at the Purple and White tournament at the University of Western Ontario in September. East Elgin had knocked them into the consolation draw, where St. Basil then beat both Hamilton Westdale and Kitchener. St. Basil won the bronze medal in AA OFSAA in 2007 and finished 6th in 2008. The other team to watch in AA is St. Catharines St. Francis, who won the bronze medal at the Ontario Catholic tournament. They have finished 7th in AA OFSAA in both 2007 and 2008.

    NCSSAA

Louis Riel (AAA) pummels St Matt's (AAAA) 63 - 23 in city final.

Louis Riel has everyone back from last years 4th place AAA OFSAA and has added some key players.

One of the favorites for sure.

I was going through the participants and rankings for the GTA schools at the 4 OFSAA websites.
    AAAA- Burlington Notre Dame- #2
    Pope #6
    Notre Dame (Ajax) #7
    D'Youville #8
    Thomson #10
    Northern #11
    Leger #13
    Markham #15

AAA- Rankings not out as of yet

    AA- Henry Carr #9
    St Thomas Aquainas #13
    Downsview #14
    Denis O'Connor #16

I do not understand how Henry Carr can be ranked ahead of both STA and Downsview. Henry Carr should be near the bottom of the rankings, not STA and Downsview. This one stood out to me.

A- No rankings out as of yet

David Grossman of the Toronto Star Comments on the GTA getting a medal this ofssa

"Now, the toughest to gauge. How about girls' basketball? Not so sure that any of the GTA teams will come out with the big prize - the gold medal. By the way, it's a cheap fake gold imported from somewhere and not the real stuff. This not the Olympics. Matter of fact, if there is a hope of a medal, it could be from Notre Dame of Burlington, Notre Dame of Ajax, St. Marguerite d'Youville of Brampton or Thomson from Toronto. I said, a medal. Don't think it will be gold."

I actually wish that Grossman would just not write anything period. Does this man ever have anything intelligent and constructive to say? I have said it before and I will say it again, Rick and Hooptowngta has given the girls game plenty of positive exposure and we certainly do not need the nonsense written by Grossman.
I wish that somebody else from one of the newspapers would appear and take away any spotlight on Grossman. He knows that he is the only remote type of exposure for basketball as it pertains to newspapers and he will continue to mock and ridicule the girls game. The immaturity is endless.
I want to also give Rogers TV a big thumbs up as they have covered high school sports with passion for many years. Dana McKiel is passionate in covering the sports, no matter who is playing and actually cares about the kids. High school rush gives great exposure to high school sports. Pretty cheesy in their commentary on sporting events but their heart is in the right place.

Part of the OFSAA seeding process is based on past results at OFSAA... and I am guessing because Carr qualified for OFSAA last year might have something to do with their higher ranking.

If you take a look at the title of the Grossman Blog, it reads

" Could this be the week that the GTA schools medals"

Not only does he refer to basketball but he also refers to volleyball and football.

So based upon the OFSAA rankngs the highest ranked GTA team is Pope at #6.
Therefore an arguement can be made that the GTA teams will be in tough finishing up with a medal.

Grossman believes Notre Dame from Ajax and D'youville have the best chances of medalling, perhaps because of last years experience.

In my opinion the St. Johns team is a quality team and deserves to be #1.
Then there's St. Mary's the host region , a school which has won 4 OFSAA titles over the past decade. I have also found that the GTA teams get very few breaks from the refs in Hamilton. Put this all togother and I can see why Grossman thinks its going to be hard for the GTA teams to medal.

So I hope the teams from the GTA are inspired by Grossman's blog and can prove him wrong.

Good Luck to all participants !!!

One addition to the OFSAA seedings for Toronto schools. Runnymede must have been the only A school in the Metro playoffs since they are in Cornwall for OFSAA. However, with the number 16 seed they are not expected to win a game. This tournament is loaded with French schools, private schools, Christian schools and schools from small towns. However, with serious declining enrollment in Toronto secondary schools coming in the next decade, will there be stronger representation at OFSAA A championships from Toronto in coming years? The problem with Toronto schools at OFSAA this year is that stronger teams from smaller schools declared up to AAAA, leaving AAA with average to below average teams at the Metro playoffs. So no chance for medals in A or AAA for Toronto schools.

Downsview received a 14 seed in Belleville AA but may surprise the Thunder Bay school Hammarskjold in the opening round. If not, they will not beat St. Catharines St. Francis in round two and go to the consolation.

For some reason AAA has not issued seedings yet.

If the seedings are accurate, here are quarter final games predictions in AAAA. Scarborough Pope John Paul II will have to try to run Waterloo off the court or hit a lot of threes in the quarter final. Otherwise, Waterloo will keep them off the boards, and Waterloo can go inside or outside. The all Notre Dame GTA quarter final should result in a Burlington win over Ajax. D'Youville is overmatched against St. John's in their quarter final. The barn burner quarter final on Friday night will be in the Cathedral gym at 8:00. St. Mary's vs St. Anne's. The last time they met in that gym was the OFSAA AAAA gold medal game in 2006. St. Mary's overcame a 15 point St. Anne's lead in the second half to win at home. St. Anne's won gold at home in 2007. Neither school was in AAAA OFSAA in 2008.

Interesting probable second round games on Friday morning will include D'Youville vs London John Paul II. The winner gets St. John's in a quarter final. John Paul II meets Northern in an all Toronto second round game. The winner gets Waterloo in a quarter final. Finally, Ajax Notre Dame meets Thomson in a battle of East GTA teams. The winner gets Burlington Notre Dame in a quarter final.

is there a reason you predicted the #5 seed to win the A OFSAA tournament?

    AAAA

st john beat nd burlington 41-37 in the final

st mary beat john paul II (london) in the bronze game

northern lost to waterloo in the consolation final

I would also like to say congrats to the Downsview Mustangs- being proud is a understatement but I am so very proud of u guys...

This is a group of young ladies that r junior age n never played on that stage before; they were beat-up, tired and emotionally drained after a heart breaking double overtime loss to the host team, in their school with the entire town of Belleville cheering against them.

We were up by 24pts going into the 4th qtr when Cassandra N fouled out on a questionable 5th-foul call, the momentum shifted to #10 Nicholson ( Belleville - COSSA (champs)) favor; the emotionally charged Nicholson fans was a huge factor in this game ...

    C for ur selves: http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/2655148

Later that evening, the girls rallied back and defeated a gamed #8 Hammarskjold team for the second time in the tournament and went on to win the Consolation Championship with a record of 4-1 ... GREAT JOB ladies ...

    Consolation Championship: http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/2664621

-The girls were tired but still pulled it off; we had to play at a much slower pace than we were used to but it worked out in the end- AAA next year GIRLS!

COACH IS VERY PROUD OF U ...
