Most Teams good teams will be heading to the Henry Carr Tourney rather than the Johnson tourney? No?
No. There will be some good teams there but a lot of coaches think it's very expensive ofr only two games guaranteed and a round robin schedule that usually favours the top seed. They get the long break in each group while the other two teams have to play their games with only one game rest in between.
Peel Fan, you are completely incorrect about the format. 4 of the 12 teams will only play 2 games. The other 8 teams play either 3 or 4 games.

Even with the conflict, at this point, I have not had any teams drop out of our tournament.

Coach Melnik, I am not mistaken about the format. Your own post confirms this. I wrote, "...only two games guaranteed..." which is exactly what your format provides. You have three teams in four groups and the top two teams in each group make the playoffs. The 3rd place team in each group is eliminated after 2 games. That means that you must win at least 1 game to guarantee a 3 rd game assuming there aren't 3 teams tied with a 1-1 record which means 1 of them would be finished anyway.

I made no comment about teams dropping out so I'm not sure how I can be incorrect about it. I know you will have no problem finding 12 teams but I was merely commenting on the fact that some coaches prefer a tournament with 3 games guaranteed regardless of results and for a slightly lower cost. That is not a criticism of your tournament, merely a statement about the preferences of some coaches.

I see what you mean. Having 8 teams play 3 or 4 games and 4 teams only play 2 games is the chance you take. Guaranteeing a third game might mean that a team could lose 3 games in a row at the tournament. That isn't fun to me. Back in the old days of 8 team tournaments, you were only guaranteed 2 games.

I don't think any tournament format is perfect. We run tournaments for the competition, to have fun, and to raise some funds for the program. I like this format. You only play 2 games in one day, and you only miss one partial day of school.

Not having teams drop out was not in response to you but rather it referred to the fact that we have a conflict, that hopefully we can still work out. Sorry for the confusion.

I agree that your format appeals to teams that don't want to commit more than 2 days but still have the advantage of a round robin schedule. It's a format that you don't see very often. Most seem to use the ladder format that used to be the standard while most round robin tournaments use 4 team groups. All of them have their advantages and disadvantages and it's up to the coaches to decide which format works best for them.

No organizer should ever feel the need to defend their format. I hope I didn't give the impression that I was criticizing your tournament. I have attended your senior one quite a few times (which uses the same format) and always enjoyed the quality of basketball.

BTW Coach, will all of Carr's teams (Jr Sr and girls) be attending the Rimrockers again this year? I always enjoy stopping by Xavier and Carmel to see Carr play an entertaining brand of basketball.
There is no "Cream of the Crop" at this point.

Here is a list near the end of last year.

1. Henry Carr A (TDCAA)
2. Pickering (Durham)
3. Mother Teresa (TDCAA)
4. Jean Vanier (TDCAA)
5. Loyola (Peel)
6.Vaughan (York)
7. Carr B (TDCAA)
8. Pope John Paul II (TDCAA)
9. St Augustine (Peel)
10. St. Marcellinus (Peel) /Father Goetz (Peel)

MT defeated Henry Carr in the Irv Salsberg at the end of the season, Pickering was not entered. That has been called an unofficial OFSSAA for Junior Basketball.

Carr beat MT in the TDCAA Playoffs. Pickering beat MT at the SBA tournament. These three were very close. Carr A beat Pickering. Pickering beat Carr A.
Thank you to what sounded like a very intense season.
