    HoopTown Members:

This afternoon, it gives me great pleasure to announce that Ms Shauna Bookal has accepted the invitation to join the SBA family and become the Director of Fundraising and Sponsorship.
Shauna is the former Events and Promotions Coordinator for Ryerson University Athletics Department.  She:

    a)      a) co-ordinated all game day promotions and sponsorship, as well as the department's community outreach programs; and
    b)      b) oversaw special events such as all tournaments, the Platinum Breakfast, Athletic Hall of Fame and the Athletic Banquet.

For all her accomplished work at Ryerson University, in 2011 Bookal was awarded the Residence Advisor Partner of the Year, Ryerson Student Union (RSU) External Partner of the Year and Viola Desmond - Marie Marguerite Rose Awards.  The Viola Desmond award is an annual award that recognizes strong, Black women who have made enormous efforts to advance the Black community in politics, business, science and any other area in the social world that the Black community is often underrepresented or misrepresented in.  Shauna was also 1 of 250 Jamaican-Canadians featured in Jamaicans in Canada: When Ackee Meets Codfish that was published in July 2012.

Before going to Ryerson, Bookal was the Marketing Co-ordinator for The Ohio State Athletics where she planned and implemented marketing strategies for the Buckeyes women's basketball team. She also developed a number of new promotional programs including:

    a.       Girl Scout Night,
    b.      Think Pink,
    c.       YMCA Night,
    d.      Timbits Clinics and Community Night.

She was the game producer for all Buckeye women's basketball home games and held the same position for the first two rounds of the 2009 NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament held in Columbus, Ohio.

Bookal has a Bachelor of Sport Management from Brock University, a Sport Business Management Graduate Certificate from Durham College and a Master of Science degree in Sport Management from West Virginia University.

As a student, Bookal was very involved on campus and in athletics. She held several positions in athletics both as an employee and a volunteer including event co-ordinator, team manager, marketing intern, minor official and student assistant in the sports information and marketing office.

While at West Virginia, Bookal was awarded the Outstanding Graduate Student in Sport Management Program and was the recipient of both the Stadium Managers Association and Jerry P. Wilkins scholarships. She also received the Durham College Participation and Leadership Award and the Professional Development award from the Brock athletic department.

    Please welcome Shauna.
