5 on 3 Power Play: Micheal Power Girls Basketball wins with 3 players

    October 20, 2012

TORONTO --- In one the most improbable situations in sport, the Michael Power Trojans senior girls basketball team pulled off an amazing triple overtime victory, 63-60, over their Toronto Catholic rival St. Joseph's Wellesely, with only 3 players to end the game.

Michael Power started the game with only 7 players at the annual Etobicoke Rams classic at Humber College. From the start, this was not going to be an ordinary tournament game as the back-to-back defending TDCAA champions; Michael Power, were playing their rival from St. Joseph's Wellesley; the team they defeated the previous 2 years in the finals.

Michael Power held the lead for most of the game until St. Joseph's went on a late run sparked by Dominque Maxwell. St. Joe's took a 3 point lead with only seconds left in the game. But Michael Power's Sarah Pezzuto hit a buzzer beater 3 from deep in the corner to send the game into overtime.

Poor foul shooting by both team in the first overtime saw the score tied at 52 going into a second overtime period. Michael Power was now down to six eligible players due to foul trouble. St. Joseph's took another 3 point lead with seconds left in the second overtime and it seemed like they had finally gotten over the hump, until post player Cheyanne Roger from Michael Power, hit a last second 3 pointer to send the battle into triple overtime.

Early into the third overtime, Cheyanne Roger fouled out with 4 of the 5 remaining players on the court in foul trouble. Nevertheless, Micheal Power still managed to hold a 1 point lead when they lost another player and were forced to play 5 on 4, with 2 minutes left. With the game tied and 1:19 left, Power lost another player due to fouls and they played the rest of the game with only 3 players. Athletes and fans from other teams lined the court to witness this drama unfold, including students from Humber College. (Also, to the dismay of their coaches, players from teams on the other court were peaking over during their own game).
Michael Power managed to secure big rebounds as there seemed to have been a lid on the basket for St. Joseph. In one instance, a layup attempt by Dominque Maxwell rolled around the rim twice before falling out. Ill-advised fouls after rebounds put Micheal Power on the line down the stretch, where they knocked down key free throws to take a 3 point advantage with 5 seconds left. After a time out, St. Joesph's missed an open 3 pointer and the buzzer sounded with the 3 players from Micheal Power running to celebrate with their disqualified teammates after what was an amazing victory.

    Michael Power 63 (Cheyanne Roger 25) - St. Joesph's Wellesley 60 (Dominque Maxwell 28)
