    Lossa Contorversy
by aces99 Today at 7:30 pm

Well we have a major problem in the LOSSA senior girls basketball playoffs. My daughter plays for the GL Roberts lakers team who went undefeated this season but were disqualified from the playoffs due to a forfeit when the game they were hosting had its time changed at 12:35 pm last Thursady from 3:45 pm by email instead of a phone call. The coach from Pereyma Patriots contacted the convenor from Lossa after the schedule had been released and confirmed by all teams the day before. The Lossa rules state that any time change has to be agreed upn by both teams and the league assignor. However the GL Roberts coach was not even contacted as to the time change. The girls then forfeited the game because they were not ready to play as most of the girls had classes they couldn't miss hence the 3:45 start time. When the game was forfeited the coach immediately protested. The protest meeting was then held Tuesday Nov.15 but was denied. Then after a bunch of emails went to Lossa and Ofsaa and the media another meeting was held this morning but again they were denied. The convenor even told Lossa that he made a bad ruling and that by rights the game should be played but Lossa would not play it. Then this afternoon the Girls From GL Roberts themselves went to Father Leo Austin in Whitby to talk to the Lossa president about the situation and he would not even talk to the team as he said it was over with and it was final. Well since the CHEX TV in Oshawa wants to interview the team as well does Oshawa This Week. Then a phone call came to my wife who has been spearheading this fight was called by the Fan 590 to be on thier Sunday morning show to talk about this mess. They also want to talk to the GL Roberts coach. CityTv is also possibly going to do a story about this as well. When our girls Played Pereyma in regular season play we beat them 36-12 my daughter the shooting guard scored 24 our points. They then went on to beat Denis O'connor from Ajax 47-22 in the final regular season game. They were so dominate in the second half that they outscored Dennis O'conor 31-3 in the second half. Now is it fair that the best team in AA Lossa basketball should not be able to represent Lossa at Ofsaa? Because of the screw up by the convenore the girls are being penalized. Should we stand for this? if not Everyone Contact the Lossa and Ofsaa representatives.

    Thanks

What was the new scheduled time?

So the time was changed without confirmation from the host team? What if the gym already had something scheduled at the new time? (ie jr. girls basketball or boys volleyball game or practice)

What if some of the players were away on a school trip?

What was the reason for the time change in the first place?

Why not just schedule a new day and time for the game?

What are the thoughts of the other teams involved in these playoffs?

Is it really worth the fight? (OFSAA will be finished by the time this gets figured out)

the time was changed from 3:45 to 2:30. The opposing coach saud she could not coach after 4pm. Well if the convenor spoke to our coach they could have set a time. He didn't even consult our coach he emailed the change less then 2 hours before the new start time when our coach was teaching. If anything a phone call should have been made not an email

So the convenor just assumes the gym would be available and goes ahead with the time change without any confirmation from the host school? (via email, phone or otherwise)
Then the opposing team just shows up at the new time?
The coach that couldn't coach after 4pm(the original time) should be the one to forfeit the game.
This whole thing seems to be silly. Should I be surprised that its LOSAA?

No you shouldn't GL Roberts is well known Bsaketball school in Durham. All of the coaches and players both Boys and Girls are determined to be the best they can. They practice alot during the year and they even do offseason workouts to keep the players at their best. The players and coaches are very dedicated to basketball and winning. Why should they not be allowed to play?

Apparently after talking to the coach of GL a request was made to play the order of junior/senior 1 week prior to the playoff schedule being sent out. It was OK'd by league convener. The day of the game the convener changes it to Sr/Jr 2 hours prior. The seniors were in class, and some on spare ...they only have 6 or 7 players on the team! Arrangement were not made in time. The juniors could have started the game, but would have finished with less than 5 players as they all thought they would be gone home by 4-hence the 2:45 start time. (COMMITMENTS)
It seems to be another set up by lossa, similar to Pickering last year. 2 programs that put in alot of time and win alot of league championships are attacked year in and year out. Ironically the GL coaches were banned for life from volunteering as convener last year. This mess was played out in emails, meetings and the board office.
After speaking with the coaches about being denied the first time, they appealed again, but were anticipating the ruling to be the same. They couldnt imagine lossa reps overturning other lossa reps.

If this is any indication to what happened last year, on GL ROBERTS being singled out, this is going to get messy and can only imagine what else comes out of this.

Both their teams finished undefeated. I looked on the website and the juniors demolished every team, even beating Peryma 92-10 (not sure about the sportsmanship), apparently a point was being made from last year, as Pereyma's VP and LOSSA EXECUTIVE member began the campaign of the coaches ban.

Post by lakers23 on Thu Nov 17, 2011 10:01 pm

This is the letter that GL Robert's senior girls team sent the LOSSA executives:

We, the GL Roberts senior girls’ basketball team, are writing this letter concerning the situation between our team and Monsignor Pereyma’s senior girls’ basketball team. We truly feel and know that we deserve to play the semi-final game against Pereyma. Firstly, with just a few hours before the start of our scheduled game, our coach received an e-mail from Courtice Secondary School stating that Pereyma wanted to change the game time due to scheduling conflicts. Due to the late notice, our coach was unable to check his e-mail as he was in class and was surprised, along with us, when Pereyma arrived and hastily informed us of their situation. In accordance with LOSSA by-laws, Pereyma left the gym and we did object to the forfeit and were prepared to play at the given time however, having Pereyma leave the gym made it impossible to have protested and played the game.

The convenor from Courtice Secondary School having changed the time of the game two hours prior to the game itself on the same day is quite unrealistic, considering the fact that it was sent via e-mail instead of a phone call. Your belief that we did not protest strongly enough against them or show any effort to play the game is completely invalid. We are involved in other extracurricular activities and do have academic obligations. Therefore it is unfair to not realize our dedication towards the team and the love of basketball itself. We literally have invested tears and sweat on this team. For most of us we have spent many consecutive years investing our time and effort into G.L. Robert’s basketball, thus the realization of us not being able to proceed on our goal to OFSAA being a devastating situation to us, our coach and our school.

Please take into consideration our love and years of hard work we have put into our goals of winning LOSSA and going to OFSAA every year capable of us. We’re most positive that our standings and an undefeated season is valid proof of this. Our love goes beyond the sport to the team itself and the relationship that we have created. This being the last year for most of us makes this situation more unbearable to realize. The decision of not allowing us to proceed to play the semi-final game due to the lack of communication of the authorities is essentially penalizing us as students on the G.L. Roberts’s basketball team. As a team we feel that we are being personally attacked and both responses from the hearings are insufficient. We feel and know that we deserve the chance to have our situation be heard from our voices. All that we are asking for is for you to allow us to play the semi-final game as it should have been played this past week. Once again, we would like to thank you for your time and do hope that you understand our situation.

    Sincerely,

I have read all of the posts on this a couple of times and I'm still confused.

What was the original playoff schedule?

    What was it changed to?

    When was it first changed?

Was it changed a second time?

How did the defaulting team find out?

What rules, if any, were broken in making this change and upon what was the appeal based?

original playoff schedule was set a week in advance.
original playoff schedule was jr game at 2:30 sr game at 3:45. This was agreed upon by convenor a week earlier.
The order of games were changed to sr/jr 2 hours prior to tip. Both Gl teams couldnt field a team at those times, thats why they asked for and were granted a change 1 week earlier.
Only changed once, 2 hours prior.
The defaulting team found out at 3:00-when the sr team returned to the gym from class. Pereyma got on the floor at 2:20 started warming up, knowing there was going to be no game, and waited until 2:45 when their VP called the convener and said GL was not on the floor its past the 15 min mark---its a forfeit..she granted them a 20-0 win. The optics are they showed knowing GL was in class, spares etc...and got the forfeit.
The only playing reg that was broken if any, is that all season AA played sr first jr second. GL asked for the change a week prior, if the answer from the convener would have been NO we cant do this, than I imagine they would have played with what they had for those games.
GL apparently asked to replay another day and this was not granted by other coaches involved as well as the convener.
Im pretty sure this is how the story was told to me by fellow coaches. Hope it answers questions.

So GL jr and sr teams had playoff games against Pereyma jr and sr girls?
Did both the jr and sr teams travel together?
GL jr girls should have been ready to go, so whats the big deal on letting the jr girls play first? What difference would it have made to the visiting teams?
Did the jr girls forfeit their game too?
Did the jr girls just sit there and wait until 3:45?
Was there any game at played at 3:45?

So what time did the Clarke team show up?

How were they informed of the time change? Phone call? voice mail? email?

Did the Clarke team go on the court and begin to warm up too?

Why would the jr team forfeit if they thought their game was supposed to be the first game? They all should have been there.

Clarke showed up at 3:10 or so. GL's players were prepared to play at 2:30, as many had commitments for 4, that is why the order of games were changed. Seniors couldnt play at 2:30 and Jr's couldnt play at 3:45. The convener called Clarke and said the game was going to be at 3:45 and she called Pereyma and said their game was at 2:30. She did this knowing that both GL teams couldnt have their teams on the floor during those times. GL juniors could have started the game but I was told would have finished with 3 or so players as many had commitments.

The problem lies wih the convener changing the game times 2 hours prior. GL was prepared all week for the JR game then the SR game because of commitments.

If the convener would have told their coaches earlier I would have imagined they would have played the games with what they had. They are reasonable, and no way would have lost those games, based on lossa standings.

Its hard to wrap your head around this. An error that was uncalled for, whereby their student-athletes got punished.

I had enough of this, this is two years in a row now for LOSSA doing the same crap again. The fact is that LOSSA are a bunch of Snakes, they're are powerhouse school haters (ie Pickering). If they're doing the same lies and setting the powerhouse/decent basketball programs every single year, does Pickering, Dunbarton, Notre Dame (Ajax), Pine Ridge, and GL Roberts trust LOSSA again to play in the school league again, I don't think so. What they do is they will withdrew from LOSSA and play in exhibition or tournaments. If I was a Coach for a powerhouse basketball school, and LOSSA does the same crap all over again towards my school ball program, I would say forget it, I would withdrew from LOSSA and Playing exhibition and Tournaments.

Then we wonder why Canada doesn't succeed on the international level! All the politics and crap like this sets the sport back ts a whole. Obviiously the convenor has some sort of agenda and doesn't care if its at the expense of the kids.

The best team in LOSSA should be representing LOSSA at OFSAA. PERIOD!

What's the resl story here? Do they hate GL for running up the score on the other teams? Why punish the kids?

Maybe a good idea would be to send them to OFSAA to face better competition and maybe get a taste of their own medicine.

This whole story is crazy!! Fire that stupid convenor and run him out of town!
