    Iowa, UNI court Tritons' Alexander
    by Brady Johnson

Basketball it its most basic fundamental is a game of putting the ball through the hoop. This is something sophomore guard Kurt Alexander does well; very well, to be exact.

The 6-2 sharp-shooter from Ontario, Canada, has been putting points on the board in a flurry and currently sit’s a top the ICCAC in individual scoring.

After a 43 point scoring barrage against Kirkwood, people outside the conference are starting to take notice.

Iowa, Northern Iowa, Creighton, Wichita State, California Northridge and California Riverside - all Division 1 schools - are in the process of actively recruiting Alexander.

“He is one of our success stories,” said men’s basketball coach Dennis Pilcher. “Nobody really knew about him out of high school. Now, everybody is coming out and showing interest.”

Alexander never played AAU basketball in high school, which prevented the bigger schools from seeing him. Alexander made the move from Canada to Fort Dodge because of his brother - who is currently a professional soccer player for Singapore - stay at Iowa Central on the soccer time here.

His freshman season was one that eventually evolved into significant playing time, as Alexander averaged nearly 11 points per contest after not starting at the beginning of the season.

This season, Alexander has simply exploded on offense to lead the conference in scoring with 20 points per contest.

After a 43 point performance against Kirkwood, Alexander had the attention of many basketball fans in the state - including Iowa fans, who saw their Hawkeyes score three points less then Alexander’s 43 earlier that week against Purdue.

“When I’m in the zone, the hoop can turn into an ocean,” said Alexander. “The first 15 minutes of the Kirkwood game, I remember looking up and seeing I had over 20 points already. It was crazy.”

The performance put Alexander’s name on a handful of Iowa basketball sites and message boards. Iowa assistant coach Chad Walthall attended the DMACC game to get a look at Alexander, and has also asked for tape on him.

With Alexander starting to heat up this season, additional coaches will likely be coming out to display interest in the guard including a handful of Missouri Valley Conference teams.

“UNI is in the top-25 right now. Iowa is Big Ten basketball - it’s weird thinking that I might have a chance to play for either of them,” said Alexander. “I’ll take my time with the process and make the right choice after the season.”

Alexander is currently leading the Tritons to a top-15 ranking as Iowa Central has won their past eight games.

Alexander said his plans for the future is to play DI basketball, and eventually play pro basketball overseas in a European league.

Congratulations to Kurt Alexander once again. He was recently named to the NJCAA All American First team for D2 junior colleges. Kurt led the Iowa Central Tritions to a 23-10 record and was the leading scorer in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference with 20ppg. He should be making a decision in the next two weeks as to where you he'll be attending school next year.

Nice Job by Kurt. I had noticed someone from Iowa Central coaching staff at the Battle of the Boards All Star Classic. The JUCO route is really not a bad route depending on the situation, whether it be grades, age, failure to right or get the qualifying grade for SAT or ACT's...etc...etc. Its good to see that he stuck it out, in the middle of nowhere and is achieving his dreams. Last year, we had another talented player do work at the JUCO level in DJ Wright. He led his team to the NJCAA Title last year! Congrats to Kurt and the several others who are in pursuit of completing there dreams to play basketball for an NCAA school on scholarship, trying to achieve both academic and athletic success at the same time!

I just noticed the name God's Gift. If your name is God's Gift, he must have been a miracle birth or something.....that a lot of pressure to put on kid growing up. However, it would be kind of cool to use that name in the Club....Hi, I'm God's Gift..and mean it! You just can't be 3rd team all american with a name like that.

FORT DODGE - Iowa Central sophomore guard Kurt Alexander was named NJCAA II First Team All-America this week.

The 6’2 native of Ontario, Canada, becomes just the fourth Iowa Central men’s basketball player to receive First Team All-American status. Alexander led the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference in points per game with 19.0. He also averaged 3.6 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. His play was a big reason the Tritons saw a return to the NJCAA II Top-15.

“Obviously, he was our go-to-guy and when we needed a basket we got the ball in his hands, he can create his own shot and that’s the type of player you have to have now days,” said head men’s basketball coach Dennis Pilcher. “He’s my third All-American an all three of those guys came in without much recruiting hype. Through hard work and lots of practice they turned themselves into All-Americans.”

Alexander will play in the NJCAA Men’s Basketball Coaches’ Association All-Star Game on Friday, April 30, in Las Vegas. Alexander is still undecided on where he will play next season but is receiving serious Division I looks.

Iowa Central finished the season with a 23-10 overall record and was ranked No. 12 in the final NJCAA II Top-15 poll.

Word is Kurt visited North Dakota State this weekend. He had verbally committed to them, then took it off the table. . .

    BJH,

I don't know where you get your sources from but you are correct. Kurt was initially suppose to visit North Dakota State this weekend, but, pushed it back and went to Drake University in Des Moine instead. He is really considering signing with the Drake Bulldogs, but, he still has visits to Washington State and Miami(Ohio) as well. Drake is good academic school...their two guards are graduating...and their style of play suites Kurt's game.

Congratulations to Kurt Alexander! He signed a National Letter of Intent earlier today with Drake University of the Missouri Valley Conference. Drake is good academic school located in Des Moine, IOwa and also two years removed from the NCAA tournament....Northern Iowa which beat No. 1 Kansas won the automatic bid this past year. I'm really proud of what he's done! He came out of Pine Ridge with a good reputation as a scorer and participated in the 2008 Adidas All Canadian Game at Ryerson, but, was not highly recruited at all....his choices came down to Humber College or Iowa Central. He chose IOwa Central....and the rest is history....two all conference selections...first team ICCAC two years in a row.... 2010 NJCAA First team All American....leading scorer in conference....and now he has officially signed a D1 Scholarship. He's done more than anyone expected.
