Are those scores typing errors? Brebeuf B is a solid team from what I've heard, and from the results I've seen.

In the MT vs. Brebeuf B we played half-court from the 2nd quarter on alternated 5-on 5-off.

No fast break. no half-court pressure. They are all Gr. 9's and their best player who is good was missing.

We did our best to keep it down.Maybe there should have been two levels the top 8 and the other 8

A 100 point game is very rare. I've only ever heard of it before in that Texas match.

What strategies did Notre Dame implement to keep the game at less than 60 points? How do the players and coach from Parkdale feel about the game with Mother Teresa? That's the only thing that really matters.

Let's face it - if the players and coach from Parkdale are okay with what happened, there is nothing wrong with the 100 point win, in this case.

    Coach,

MT was playing Brebeuf B. Their coach thanked us for stopping the break and playing half-court.

My fellow coach and their coach talked for at least half an hour following the game.

On top of everything every shot we were taking was going in. One of those games, there was no pressure on us and we just relaxed and made shots.

There are plenty of 100 point games every year. Fr. Henry Carr 115-90 over St. Mary's.

Vaughan has had several including 112-47 over a good Dunbarton team.

They are not a great experience for anyone involved but they do happen right here in the GTA.

    Coach Clement,

I meant games where the margin is 100.

As I stated and you clarified, if the other team is able to walk away with their dignity and there are no hard feelings from the opposing coach, I don't see a problem with that score.

I think it's unfair that some people were making accusations of 'no mercy' without knowing the details.

What a day of basketball! Tiring, exciting and fun. For me, it really showed which teams were prepared after the holiday/exam break. Mental toughness and conditioning really told the tale in those last set of evening games. Thanks for Mr. Kerr for setting up a nice tournament :-)

I would like to comment on the 100 pt games.

As hard as coaches work to beat teams by 10 I think they can become more creative when it comes to preserving the feelings of the players of teams who can be beaten by 100. It's not enough to pull off your press after the half. If everything you put up goes in then stop shooting. One may reply: "Asking my players to stop shooting, or make 10 passes, or stop dribbling, or go to a sagging 2-3 zone is unfair to my players and not real basketball." If winning is the primary motivation of your programme then I agree.

On the other hand, if the primary motivation is to develop caring, thoughtful, respectful young men (this goal is not limited to Catholic education of course) then I fail to see what can be gained by beating the likes of Parkdale by 90? (I felt bad for the Parkdale team...a small 500+ inner city 60% ESL school against a 1000+ perennial powerhouse from the Burbs.) While this may not fit someone's definition of no mercy it's certainly not mercy enough.

I was far from the only coach/parent/spectator there dismayed by these lob-sided results.

I can tell you from the experience of losing to Vaughn 111-47 in the finals of their tournament in their gym that my players were not unaffected by such a defeat. I was puzzled by the host coach's decision to continue to pour it on while my bench was in for most of the second half. Perhaps he was caught up in the exciting (hostile) atmosphere of the home crowd hopping with excitement at a 100+ score? Or maybe I am to believe they stood to improve by using my bench as a dummy defense practice squad...who knows. (I must say that the players never taunted, show-boated or otherwise rubbed it in which was nice to see.)

Of course there are those who will continue to hammer weaker teams because "they have work to do" or "this is the real world of basketball" and if you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen, but I would like to think that the majority of coaches and players are more interested in the integrity of the game and the developing psyches of the young men we are responsible for.

Thank you Dunbarton. I don't think enough coaches are speaking out against lopsided scores.

To me, it's obvious that some coaches have a different agenda, and, sometimes, it's at the expense of another team. It seems like it's gotten worse this season. As you said, players ARE affected by lopsided scores - how couldn't they be?

I'm still curious as to what strategies Notre Dame used against Parkdale, to keep the margin to at less than 60. I mean, they were obviously the best team in their group that day, but only beat Parkdale by less than 60. Still a big margin, but you can see that the attempt was there.

I didn't see that game but I do know that we have an imbalance in our league (it's basically Pickering, ND, Dunbarton then the rest...although JCR and Pineridge have come along since the beginning of the season) where we play some really weak teams.

In the past we have ordered the kids to make 10 passes before they shoot, stick to a weak zone, sit the starters of course, etc. I will admit that sometimes you get a little caught up, especially when coaching by yourself, and forget what the score is...I have had one of our seniors come over and say, "Mr. Dougall you're up by 30 take your press off". I felt bad about that one. The important thing here is our kids recognize that it is unsportsmanlike to embarrass another team...especially in our gym as they are our guests.

I think this teaches or kids how to be somewhat humble, disciplined and more mature. For me, it would reflect poorly on myself, my team and my school if we were to treat other teams unkindly.

What is going on with Basketball? Coach Clement when you lost to Pope in a league game you said you played mostly your Gr 9's now you beat a team by 100 it's the same reason! Those that make it sound better if you win or lose?

What was the opposing coach thinking? You have to know the calibre of the teams entering but what does the coach of the stronger team do when you realize how this game is going to turn out!

SWING, MOTION, was this not an option????? There is no song and dance that can explain what both Vaughan and MT did to those teams, 100 + 90?

MT lost by 1 point to ND, oh sorry you were playing with mostly Gr 9's!! A loss is never a nice feeling but how would you feel to have lost by 100!

Coach D/Imgrund - this game is no longer about the development of children because we love the sport! We wonder why our youth involved in the sport behave the way they do! The things that happen on the court? Bragging rights? The ability to say we killed them by so much???

The emotion on the bench when MT lost was heavy! Oh bad calls, Grade 9's, yes we are sure these are all the reasons!!

Coach D and Imgrund I wish you were involved in the GTA maybe with the thoughts that you have shared here would shake things up in a more positive direction!

Coach Clement try walking a mile in weak shoes!!!
